The Book Of Clarence Showtimes​ written by the multihyphenate Jeymes Samuel, is a beautifully rendered film that just loses its meaning. Samuel's screenplay, which centers on Clarence (LaKeith Stanfield), a street hustler in A.D. 33 Jerusalem, is a ridiculous exploitation movie that desperately tries to gain political significance under the forgotten presumption that every Black movie must be significant. Samuel has a precise vision, as seen in his directorial debut, "The Harder They Fall," but there's a thin line between altering the genre and making it unintelligible.

Clarence first thinks about becoming baptized because he thinks God will keep him safe. It's such a conceited notion that he gets humorously slapped by John the Baptist, played by David Oyelowo. Clarence then makes the decision to become an apostle because he thinks that Jesus' group of "made-men" would keep him safe. There are several issues with the approach as well: As you may remember, Clarence is an atheist. He is also separated from his brother Thomas, who not only deserted their mother (Marianne Jean-Baptiste), but also feels ashamed of Clarence's presence. When given the opportunity, Clarence fails at the task assigned by the other disciples, only freeing one gladiatorial slave, Barabbas (a captivating Omar Sy). 

The film's misdirected comedy, which only becomes creakier when Clarence seeks to make wealthy fast by masquerading as a new messiah, laboriously paces these botched hustles. Almost halfway through the movie, Clarence has this "lightbulb moment"—yes, a real lightbulb appears above his head. After that, you start to question just who this film is intended for. You see, Clarence doesn't think Jesus does real miracles or that he was conceived in an immaculate manner. He believes that Jesus' intricate tricks have made him renowned. As a result, the movie attempts to balance making fun of Christianity with putting Clarence on a quest for self-awareness.
